INIA Chile redirects rice cultivation in Chile towards sustainability

Chile Spanish

In a changing agricultural scenario, characterized by greater environmental protection, climate change and scarcity of irrigation water, the INIA Rice Genetic Improvement Program aims to establish an increasingly sustainable crop, implementing new production methods.

The merger of a new agronomic management without herbicides, plus the implementation in the experimental phase of the SRI (System of Rice Intensification) methodology, is part of a reorientation towards sustainable production.

SRI is a modality that aims to generate higher yields from the resources already available, without the need to use new genetics or improved varieties, neither synthetic nor chemical fertilizers, which added to a suppression of the herbicides contribute to a very encouraging scenario .
